How much mortar do I need per brick?

One 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays approximately 35 standard bricks with 3/8-inch joints. For 1000 bricks, plan on approximately 29 bags of mortar.

What type of mortar should I use for brick?

Type N mortar is standard for above-grade exterior brick walls. Type S is stronger and used for structural walls and below-grade applications. Type M is the strongest and used for load-bearing walls and foundations.
