How to Calculate Bricks: Estimating Guide for Walls & Patios
Calculate bricks for walls, patios, and walkways. Mortar quantities, brick types, bond patterns, waste factors, and cost per 1000 bricks.
Standard Brick Dimensions
A standard modular brick measures 3.75 inches wide × 2.25 inches tall × 8 inches long with a standard 3/8 inch mortar joint. Including the mortar joint, this gives a nominal 4 × 2.67 × 8.5 inch unit. These standard dimensions make calculating quantities straightforward once you know your coverage rates.
Bricks Per Square Foot
Coverage depends on whether bricks are laid flat (paving) or on edge (walls):
- Brick walls (stretcher course, face showing): Approximately 6.75–7 bricks per sq ft of wall face area, including standard mortar joints
- Flat paving (laid flat on a patio or path): Approximately 4.5 bricks per sq ft
- Soldier course (bricks standing on end): Approximately 3 bricks per sq ft
For a 10×12 ft patio: 120 sq ft × 4.5 = 540 bricks needed before waste factor.
Bond Patterns and Their Waste Factors
The pattern you choose affects both the look and the amount of cut bricks:
- Running bond (offset half-brick): The most common pattern. Minimal cuts. Add 5% waste.
- Stack bond (grid pattern): All joints aligned. Minimal cuts but structurally weaker for walls. Add 5% waste.
- Herringbone: Diagonal 45° or 90° pattern. Elegant for patios. Add 10–15% waste for cuts at edges.
- Flemish bond: Alternating headers and stretchers. Traditional look for walls. Add 5–8% waste.
Mortar Calculation
Mortar is mixed from Portland cement and sand. The standard masonry mortar ratio is 1 part cement to 3 parts masonry sand. One 60-lb bag of mortar mix (pre-blended) covers approximately 25–30 bricks for wall construction, or 40–50 bricks for paving joints.
For wall construction: divide total brick count by 27 to find bags needed. For a 540-brick patio: 540 ÷ 40 = 14 bags of mortar mix. Add 10% for waste and practice batches.
Types of Brick
- Face brick (Common brick): Used for exterior walls and facades. Weather-resistant, consistent color. $0.50–$1.00 each.
- Paving brick / brick pavers: Thicker and harder than face brick. Designed for foot traffic and vehicle loads. $0.60–$1.20 each.
- Firebrick: Used in fireplaces and high-heat applications. Resists temperatures up to 2,000°F. $1.50–$3.00 each.
- Thin brick veneer: Glued to existing walls for cosmetic effect. 0.5–0.75 inches thick. $3–$8/sqft.
Cost per 1,000 Bricks
Standard face brick typically costs $300–$700 per 1,000 bricks depending on type, color, and texture. Premium hand-molded or specialty bricks can reach $1,000–$2,000 per 1,000. Delivery adds $50–$150 per pallet (typically 500–525 bricks per pallet). For a 500 sq ft patio requiring approximately 2,250 bricks (at 4.5/sqft × 500 sqft, plus 5% waste), expect to pay $675–$1,575 in brick material alone.
