How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. 1

Enter the total pipe length in feet.

  2. 2

Enter the required slope in inches per foot (1/4 inch per foot is standard for most drains).

  3. 3

Enter the pipe diameter for reference.

  4. 4

The total drop tells you how much lower the end of the pipe must be compared to the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct slope for a drain pipe?

Most plumbing codes require 1/4 inch per foot (2% slope) for drain pipes 3 inches or larger, and 1/4 inch per foot for pipes smaller than 3 inches. Some codes allow 1/8 inch per foot for pipes 4 inches and larger.

Can a drain pipe have too much slope?

Yes. Too steep a slope (over 1/2 inch per foot) can cause liquids to run ahead of solids, leaving debris behind and causing clogs. The ideal slope keeps liquids and solids moving together.

How do I measure drain pipe slope?

Use a 2-foot or 4-foot level with a shim under one end. For 1/4 inch per foot slope on a 4-foot level, raise one end by 1 inch. You can also use a smart level app that reads in degrees or percentages.
