How to Calculate Square Footage of Land: Lots, Acreage, and Irregular Shapes
How to calculate land area in square feet and acres for rectangular lots, irregular shapes, and how to convert between units for real estate and landscaping.
Basic Land Area Calculations
Rectangular lot: Length × Width = Square footage. Example: 100 ft × 150 ft = 15,000 sq ft.
Triangular area: (Base × Height) ÷ 2. Often used for triangular sections of irregular lots.
Circular area: π × radius². A circular garden 20 ft in diameter has area = 3.14159 × 10² = 314 sq ft.
Converting Between Units
- 1 acre = 43,560 square feet
- 1 square mile = 640 acres = 27,878,400 sq ft
- 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters = 107,639 sq ft = 2.47 acres
- 1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters
Quick reference: 1/4 acre lot = 10,890 sq ft | 1/2 acre = 21,780 sq ft | 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft (roughly the size of a football field). A "40×125" typical suburban lot = 5,000 sq ft = 0.115 acres.
Measuring Irregular Lots
Most lots aren't perfect rectangles. Three methods:
- Decompose into shapes: Divide the irregular lot into triangles and rectangles, calculate each area separately, add together.
- Survey plat: The most accurate source. Your property deed or county GIS should have the official survey with metes and bounds or lot dimensions.
- GPS measurement tools: Apps like GPS Fields Area Measure or Google Maps area calculation can measure irregular parcels by walking the boundary. Accurate to 1–3% for most properties.
Practical Applications
Landscaping: mulch, topsoil, and sod calculators require accurate area measurements. Real estate: per-square-foot land value comparisons require accurate lot sizes — the county assessor's records are usually the most reliable source for residential lots.
