Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many studs do I need per foot of wall?

At 16-inch on center spacing, you need approximately 0.75 studs per linear foot of wall. At 24-inch spacing, you need approximately 0.5 studs per foot. Add extra for corners and openings.

What is the standard stud spacing?

Load-bearing walls use 16-inch on center stud spacing. Non-load-bearing (partition) walls can use 24-inch spacing. Some advanced framing techniques use 24-inch spacing with 2x6 studs for exterior walls.

How long are pre-cut studs?

Pre-cut studs are 92-5/8 inches long (for 8-foot ceilings) and 104-5/8 inches (for 9-foot ceilings). These lengths account for the thickness of three plates (one bottom, two top).
